The Waterford mouthpiece on this Bombers Full Cheek bit is made up of a series of flexible ball links, which spread the pressure around the horse's mouth, encouraging mouthing and salivating while deterring the horse from leaning on the bit.
As there is nothing rigid for the horse to latch on to, the Waterford can be very useful for giving the rider extra control on horses that tend to lean on the bit, set their jaw or take hold of the bit. It is suitable for most types of mouth conformation, including horses with large tongues.
The blue sweet iron mouthpiece from Bombers Bits oxidises easily, creating a warm, sweet taste in the horse's mouth. This encourages salivation and acceptance of the bit.
Full cheeks can be useful for horses that are unsure of the bit, because the bit doesn't move around so much in the mouth as it would do with loose rings, therefore encouraging the horse to stretch into the contact. The full cheeks also help to prevent pinching at the sides of the mouth.
The arms of the full cheeks assist with steering, as pressure is applied to the cheek when a turning aid is given. The cheeks also ensure that the mouthpiece remains in a central position and cannot slide through the horse's mouth.
The Waterford is usually worn 1/4in to 1/2in longer than your traditional mouthpiece in order to curl around the lips and maximise the effect.
Please note that the blue will fade with use.
